Vranicki: 29 June is not moving
Postponing the elections would further worsen the situation in the country. Europe and the US will strongly help Albania after the vote. The elections are the first step toward solving the crisis
Thief Nano forever
Just two days before Vranicki’s arrival he sent Ramiz Alia a letter in the name of “social peace,” in order to “justify” the head of the Albanian communists. Fatos Nano continued this style of his. Even before Vranicki’s arrival, in an effort to leave Vienna with a good impression, he too gave an interview in the name of “social peace,” on the one hand absolving himself and his close collaborators in the armed uprising of the PPSh and accusing the country of having entered a “spiral of violence,” where “evil had become routine.” Naturally, the blame for this lies with the government (he is still chairman of the Socialist Party and we do not want to believe that he spoke on behalf of the government) or with the right-wing political force. According to him, “the spiral of violence and divisive hatred has gripped the country since the summer of 1996...”
Perhaps he wanted to reveal something about himself. We add only this comment: accusing the right-wing government of a “spiral of violence and hatred” when you are the head of the party that started everything with its hatred against the left, against Sali Berisha in particular and the right-wing government in general, is frankly pathetic. A few days earlier, after failing with a wall poster against the “dictator” and “tyrant,” with slanders and lies that have now gone stale, after he had set only himself and his own crowd against the authority of the state, Fatos Nano appeared on state television in a “clarifying” interview, perhaps without realizing that he was exposing himself. He wanted to calm tempers, to remove the fear of a “return of communism” among Albanians! He was reassuring Albanians, and even foreigners, that “my party has changed”! That was known, in fact, and was not any great revelation. We all know that no communist party in the world is what it once was. But those who change their clothes quickly are just as dangerous as the old communists. Above all, it must be understood that it is not the party “by changing” that becomes social-democratic with democratic leaders. This kind of change does not come from a party congress or a press conference. It takes time. It takes a great deal of time and enormous theoretical and practical effort. Not to mention the necessity of moral cleansing. These things cannot be done in Albania within a year. Perhaps without realizing it and regardless of himself, Fatos Nano finally told the truth about his party. “It has not changed yet,” would be the correct formula.

Free economic zones and the socialists are seized by “anxiety fever”
Socialist hostility toward economic development
Nano’s idea is intended to turn what is called the stronghold of socialist development into the establishment of free economic zones in the country, continuously besieged by violence, in the name of “protecting” agriculture. In the background, it is tied to the policy of the PPSh for its Vlora, which we have seen being relinquished, built with the struggle over “free zones,” if in that city in the elections of 29 June the socialists do not win. The only thing their talk about “Vlora” does not mention is the battle for Vlora against economic freedoms, which they have attacked in harsh words and which has gripped them in panic. The same thing they did with adviser Vranicki during his visit to Tirana, where he clearly stated that there can be no independence from development through the destruction of free zones. Some of the socialists have lost their judgment and speak the language of the past.
